Who we are

News Africa, based in Nigeria, is responsible for the information described here. You can reach us about privacy through the Contact page (newsafrica.org/contact), choosing “Privacy or accessibility”.

Information we handle

  • Messages you send through our Contact page: name, email address, topic, subject and message.

  • If you create a reader account: display name, email address, password (stored only as a secure hash), and whether you agreed to receive our newsletter.

  • Comments you post, under your display name.

  • Anonymous usage statistics: the pages viewed, the site that referred you, device type, and how far you scrolled. We do not use cookies for these statistics and we do not store your IP address; visits are counted with a code that changes every day so they cannot be linked over time.

  • If you accept optional cookies: Google Analytics measurements and Google AdSense advertising, as described in our Cookie policy.

  • If you switch on breaking-news alerts: the address your browser’s push service gives us and its encryption keys, and the browser family (for example Chrome). No name or email. Switching alerts off, or blocking them in your browser, removes it.

How we use it

To answer your messages, run reader accounts and comments, send the newsletter only if you opted in, understand which stories readers find useful, show advertising, and keep the site secure. We rely on your consent for the newsletter and optional cookies, and on our legitimate interest in running and securing the service for the rest.

Who we share it with

Providers that run the service for us: our hosting and email provider (Hostinger), and Google if you accept analytics or advertising cookies. These providers may process information outside Nigeria under their own contractual safeguards. We do not sell your personal information.

How long we keep it

Contact messages: up to two years. Reader accounts: until you delete your account. Anonymous usage statistics: raw records for 90 days, then only totals.

Your rights

Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 you can ask us for access to, correction or deletion of your information, and withdraw consent at any time. You can delete your reader account yourself, unsubscribe from any newsletter email, and change your cookie choices from the link in the footer. You may also complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).
